Join us in peaceful protest.

In April 2025 the Clark County jail began incarcerating ICE detainees after signing a financial agreement with federal authorities. Local officials have suggested this money could help offset tax shortfalls.

We reject the notion that balancing budgets can justify stripping people of their dignity and ripping apart families.

Signs and sign material may be available on-site.

Community Potluck

Come to the inaugural DSSI Community Potluck!

Let us know you’re coming on FB here.

Live Music
We’re thrilled to welcome two incredible musical guests:
Tonya Buckler (DSSIN member) Louisville-born, Southern Indiana-based singer-songwriter influenced by Patty Griffin, Indigo Girls, and Heart. Tonya performs with The Fellow Travelers and The Navigators, and is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer bringing songs of peace and justice to our gathering.

PlumRidge (formerly Dorney & Friends) Dorney, Barb Hawley, and Mike Williams have been making music together in Louisville for decades. With 60+ years of friendship and 20 years of making merry music, they’re bringing a treasure trove of tunes that have made up the soundtrack of our lives. Get ready to sing along!

Delicious Food
Bring your favorite dish to share - whether it’s Grandma’s famous casserole, your go-to potluck contribution, or something completely new. We love variety, so bring whatever makes your heart (and stomach) happy!

Family Friendly
Kids are absolutely welcome! We’ll have activities to keep the little ones entertained while the grown-ups connect, eat, and enjoy the music.

Real Connection
With more than 600 members, many of us have never actually met face-to-face. We’ve stood together at rallies, worked alongside each other in committees, supported each other online - but there’s something irreplaceable about simply being together, sharing a meal, and letting ourselves be known.

Show up for Kentucky Citizens for Democracy's fight against LifeWise

In Support of Kentucky Citizens for Democracy

📢 Update/Call to Action: LifeWise

Board Chair Carly Clem has confirmed that the OCS Board will meet October 8 at 5:00 pm at the Arvin Center to discuss and vote on the “moral instruction” statute. She indicated that there will be no public expression on the agenda.

Background

Kentucky’s Attorney General recently confirmed that we are a “may” state. This means school districts have the option to not allow student release time from school for programs like LifeWise. The AG emphasized that the Board must submit evidence for their decision and the decision must not be discriminatory towards religion.

The Board is within its rights to reject LifeWise programs because of:

• Loss of more than 30 hours of instructional time each year.

• Devaluing of art, music, library, and technology programs.

• Major scheduling disruptions.

• Liability and insurance risks that could impact taxpayers.

• Loopholes that allow LifeWise staff to directly contact students outside school channels.

• Increased risk of bullying and exclusion.

• Legal exposure around separation of church and state.

• Pressure to approve any moral instruction program (including fringe or harmful groups) once one is approved.

LifeWise has sued parents, threatened organizations, and lobbied legislatures to force districts to adopt their programs. This is not a neutral, community-driven effort—it’s a national push with significant risks.

Call to Action

The Board needs substantial evidence to say “no.” Please contact your board members and remind them of the above reasons.

✅ Please attend the October 8 meeting to send a strong and unified message to the Board and community. Please wear your black KCfD shirt or anything black so that there is a clear visual of our opposition.

Thank you for standing up for all kids, all families, and our public schools.
